Interview with fashion and fine art photographer Vaughan Treyvellan
Who is Vaughan Treyvellan?
I am a lover of art, beauty and the not so normal.
Which place do you call home?
At the moment its where the work is and where what makes myself and my partner happy
Are you self taught or schooled?
I was schooled through assisting, the best way I believe, assisted many photographers for 8 years.
How did you get into photography?
Through my studies I was studying to be a graphic artist and one of the classes was photography, first shutter click and I was hooked.
Was there a breakthrough moment in your career?
There are always those moments, some only I’ve seen or felt getting an image that’s been in my head for years finally! Shooting amazing people like John Cleese and Kelly Osborn, or just watching some one slowly come out of there shell as we spend the day shooting. And I hope to keep experiencing these moments.
How would you describe your style?
Clean, True and a little Romantic
How do you define beauty?
It’s that moment your breath is taken away by a smile, a look in the eye, the way a body moves or in the moments of stillness and quiet and equally in life’s laud chaotic moments.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is always changing always shiny bright and new, I feel we can chase it forever and never really get close to it.
As you look through the viewfinder, what is the most critical moment in capturing your image?
That depends some of the best images are by accident after that critical moment, but you only really know when the heart and the head say yes at that exact moment.
How do you select the models you collaborate with?
Everyone is different in looks and personality; I look for models to feed the looks and personality that’s right for what I am shooting at that moment.
What do you think makes a truly memorable photo?
Perspective!!! This is the question that is always bugging me. There are no right or wrong answers here. The picture is only as good or bad or memorable to the person who is looking at it at that moment. This is something you cannot really control. I shoot for this all the time to be remembered or my work to be remembered is almost everything to me. But it’s up to the viewer to decide or feel anything.
We know each of us has someone or something that inspires our life and work. Can you tell us the true basis of your inspiration?
My Partner is my inspiration, our lives together has taught me to always push, always look for the beauty and strength, especially in women. She has kept me true and has stood by me and pushed me, I would not be who I am with out her nor my work. She is my inspiration in life and work.
What photographers from the past or present have influenced you the most?
This is a long list, but this is the shortened version Cartier Bresson – capturing humanity so brilliantly
Vincent Peters – His beautiful understanding of light
Jacque Weyers – His skill but more importantly his ability to stay cool and calm and always being a favourite to shoot with in the industry
Bruno Dayan – his mind and ability to show it and shoot it. Pure fantasy
What has been your favorite photo location or session?
Shooting with my partner, in the desert just the two of us, nothing has ever quite come close.
What type of cameras do you shoot with?
Anything really, but in my kit a t the moment is Canon 5dmk3 and Sony A7 mk2
If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Canon 85mm f/1.2 the most beautiful glass ever!!
Analogue or digital?
I like both but shoot mainly digital.
Do you prefer flash or daylight?
Both have their place, but at the moment I am playing with daylight.
What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My filters especially my coken crystal filter
How important is Photoshop in your final images?
Photography has changed into a broader art form, some people like to Photoshop so that there subject looks outer worldly or change the backgrounds to give us a more surreal feeling. It is an art form and I leave the decisions and uses of the tools to the artists that use them. I use Photoshop to heighten the feeling I had while shooting, a colour change, or contrast change, removing blemishes on the models face all to portray a feeling. So yes I feel Photoshop is important. Its another brush the artist can choose to use or not.
What are your thoughts on instagram and facebook and how important is a website and social media for your business?
It has become very important. This took me a while to understand, it’s become a second book for the world to see my work, and it’s an opportunity for me to present what I love out to the world. Its lots of work and its still very strange and new but I am staring to get the hang of it.
Do you listen to music while doing your shooting? If so, what are you playing right now?
Depends on the shoot, location and feel we looking for, what am I listing to right now anything from ben Howard or Eddie Vedder
What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?
Love it first, it’s a tough industry and it will lift you up and down at every turn, if you do not really love it. You will not succeed
